Hats off to the HS1

The risks involved in horse riding are rarely considered by most riders and many of us get back on after a fall, often without a second thought. Occasionally however, we might just be left feeling that we were pretty lucky not to have sustained more serious injury, as was the case for young Scottish event rider Charlotte Agnew: “I was fortunate enough to win a couple of Gatehouse jockey skulls in 2006, including my much prized silver HS1, which has the American SNELL E2001 standard as well as PAS and BSEN. I found it to be much more comfortable than my other hats and I think the silver is infinitely more stylish, but it was not until I had a bad fall that I fully appreciated the additional safety benefits.
“I had quite a nasty fall onto my head in the U25's at Bramham and it did a really great job as my only injuries were a couple of faints. I am convinced that the HS1 saved my life on that occasion, as I collided headfirst with the ground at some speed.”
The Gatehouse HS1 is the only jockey skull in the UK to carry the American SNELL E2001, as well as PAS015 and BS EN 1384. Widely regarded as the highest riding hat standard currently in manufacture, SNELL E2001 includes a unique test that simulates a rider falling onto a fence rail or having a secondary hit by a horse’s hoof.
As is so important following a fall, Charlotte replaced her previous Gatehouse HS1 helmet with a new one, so she can continue her season, not just in style and comfort, but with the added assurance that the SNELL standard offers. She has since won Gold as a member of the 'Jump Savings British Eventing Young Riders Team' at the recent European Championships.
